Wanted man killed in shootout had pistol, live rounds – police

The Guyana Police Force yesterday said  that a .32 Taurus pistol and a magazine containing three live rounds were recovered from William De Abreu, for whom a wanted bulletin was issued on May 17. De Abreu was shot and killed on Tuesday following a confrontation with police at Bachelor’s Adventure on the East Coast of Demerara.

According to police, acting on intelligence received about the suspect’s whereabouts, ranks went to Bachelor’s Adventure, where they spotted De Abreu. Upon seeing the cops, the man drew a firearm from his waist and discharged several rounds in the direction of the policemen, a release from the police said.

This action prompted the ranks to take cover and return fire, hitting De Abreu who subsequently fell to the ground. One .32 Taurus pistol and a magazine containing three live rounds were recovered from his hand. His body was examined and one gunshot wound was observed to the right side of his chest and one each to both feet.

 The man was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he succumbed about 17:50 hours while receiving medical attention, the release further stated.
