Ince-Carvalhal among the winners as Guinness Squash Championship serves off

The Guinness sponsored Senior National men’s and women’s Squash championships opened Monday evening with Samuel Ince-Carvalhal among the winners during an entertaining programme at the Georgetown Club, Camp Street.

Ince-Carvalhal who participated in the recently held Pan American qualifiers in Colombia had an easy three sets win over Justin Ten Pow with the scores being 11-3, 11-4 and 11-5.

Similarly, Reagan Pollard also had an easy passage against Avinash Ouditt 11-6, 11-4, 11-6 while Nicholas Verwey made light work of Jeremy Ten-Pow also in straight sets 11-6, 11-3, 11-4, and Deje Dias bested Demmetrius De Abreu 11-6, 11-6, 11-7.

Other winners in the men’s national draw included Peter De Groot, Ben Mekdeci, Steven Xavier, Jonathan Antczar and Michael Alphonso.

De Groot de Groot defeated Richard Rodrigues 11-3, 11-1, 11-3, whilst Mekdeci stopped Josh Verwey 11-1, 11-4, 11-4 and Stven Xavier got the better of Andrew Peroune 11-4, 11-4, 11-5.

Likewise, Antczar downed Dane Pereira 11-2, 11-8, 11-7, and Alphonso brushed aside Miguel Wong 11-0, 11-2, 11-6.

Meanwhile, Mohryan Baksh eased past Nandishraj Singh 11-1, 11-1, 11-1, whilst Jason van Dijk was too strong for Chad DeAbreu 11-7, 11-3, 11-4 and Jerazeno Bell took care of Lee Fung a Fat 11-2, 11-6, 11-1.

In the two women’s matches, Kirsten Gomes beat Malia Maikoo 11-1, 11-1, 11-1 and Larissa Wiltshire defeated Safirah Sumner 11-2, 11-2 and 11-6.

The men’s over-50 saw Brian Yong, Narendra Singh, Rob Edwards and Joseph Mekdeci coming out victorious. Yong prevailed against Brian Edwards 11-3, 11-7, 17-19 and 11-2, while Singh won against Lloyd Fung a Fat 11-7, 11-7, 11-13, 11-5, Edwards overcame Denis Dias 2-10, 5-11, 11-7, 12-10, and Mekdeci brushed aside Michael Atherley 11-6, 11-6 and 11-3.

The tournament comprises several categories. They are the men’s national, men’s over 40 and Veterans over 50, women’s national and women’s veterans. The finals in all divisions will be played off this weekend.
