Missing Kaneville student found dead in Essequibo River

Police are investigating the suspected drowning of a 14-year-old student of Kaneville Squatting area, East Bank Demerara, whose body was found on Wednesday afternoon, floating in the Essequibo River in the vicinity of 5th Avenue beach.

The body was identified as Daniel Cameron. The police reported that the teen’s body was clad in a green and grey three-quarter pants and black striped T-shirt.

Investigations revealed that on Tuesday at about 15.00 hours, Cameron travelled from Supenaam to Bartica where he met his uncle who was supposed to take him into the Sand Hill Backdam to see his grandmother. At about 17.30 hours that day, he accompanied his uncle to the Bartica Regional Hospital to have a malaria smear done.

According to the uncle, upon reaching the hospital, Cameron asked to be allowed to play on the swing located in the play park opposite the hospital. About 15 minutes later, after taking the test, his uncle went to the play park to check for the Cameron but did not see him. Efforts were made to locate Cameron throughout the night but to no avail.

At around 15.45 hours on Wednesday, investigators found the boy floating face down about 200 feet from the left bank of the Essequibo River in the vicinity of 5th Avenue beach.

The body was pulled from the river and taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital. It is presently at the mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
