The family of a 29-year-old farmer who was struck down and killed on Foulis Access Road early Sunday morning is demanding a thorough investigation. A motorcyclist has been arrested.

Police are investigating the hit and run fatal incident that occurred around 01:30 hrs yesterday on the Foulis Access Road, East Coast Demerara. The incident involved an unknown vehicle and pedestrian Ameer Bassalut, 29, of Lot 553 Foulis, East Coast Demerara.

Bassalut was apparently walking north along the eastern side of Foulis Access Road when he was struck by a vehicle in the vicinity of Fifteen Street. He fell to the road surface and sustained injuries.

He was picked up by the police in an unconscious state and taken to Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Sixty-year-old Barbara Sebastian, the mother of Bassalut, told Stabroek News yesterday that she was asleep when she received a phone call at approximately 2 am. She was familiar with the caller who stated that her son had been involved in an accident and was bleeding terribly. Sebastian said she went the scene and found the police and others there, but her son had already been transported to the hospital.

The tearful mother explained that when she got there, she was told that her son had died. A doctor inquired about her identity and informed her about Bassalut’s death.

Another family member who visited the Cove and John Police Station related that a motorcyclist and a driver of a motorcar were arrested. She alleged that the windscreen of the car had a crack while the rider of the motorcycle had injuries about his body including his arm, mouth and feet.

The motorcyclist in custody is a 23-year-old from Foulis. His motorcycle, which had damages to the left side front and traces of blood, was taken to the Cove and John Police Station, where it was lodged to be examined by certifying officer, the police said.
