Historic ‘One Guyana’ Basketball League launched

The inaugural edition of the ‘One Guyana’ Basketball Premier League was officially launched on Friday at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.

The tournament which is collaboration between the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport (MCY&S) and G-Boats Incorporated, will officially commence on August 12th.

The event, which will be administered by the Guyana Basketball Federation, and forms part of the National Sports Academy, features 14 teams divided into two zones, which are the Harpy Eagles and Jaguars Conferences respectively.

A minimum of 56 fixtures and a maximum of 63 matches is projected for the competition which concludes in March 2024.

The winner of the tournament, which will be played on every Saturday at the National Gymnasium, will pocket $1,000,000 whilst the loser will receive $500,000.

Minister of MCY&S Charles Ramson Jr said, hailed the tournament as an historic platform for the sport, noting that the event is conceptualized to develop a sporting culture within the discipline that emphasizes professionalism while providing the tenets of development.

Meanwhile, Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association chief Jermaine Slater said, “The league comes as a response to the growing demand from players and coaches for a platform that fosters the growth, development, and nurturing of basketball talents across Guyana.”

On the other hand, G-Boats representative Sherman Gonsalves stated that the company is enthused to support the discipline, and envisions additional support for other sports, as they provide a vital avenue for the development of youth.
