Shariff wins Diamond Insurance Women’s Chess Qualifiers

Sasha Shariff with six-and-one- half points won the Guyana Chess federation (GCF) Diamond Insurance women’s seven round Swiss System Qualifiers.

National Under-16 Champion Anaya Lall was second with five points, losing only to Waveney Johnson and drawing her matches against Aditi Joshi and Italy Ton Chung.

Third was former U14 champion, Ciel Clement, who also ended with five points but lost out on the Sonneborn–Berger tie-break.

Johnson, with 4.5 points was fourth. She lost to Shariff, saw a won endgame position against Vienna Bharosay ending in a stalemate and drew her games with Jessica Callender and Aniyah Couchman.

Adia Alphonso and Couchman ended fifth and sixth with 4.5 points each while Callender, Joshi and Chelsea Harrison each ended on four points for seventh, eighth and ninth positions and will advance to the Nationals.

The final qualifying spot went to Italy Ton Chung with three points.

The Closed national women’s chess championships will commence Thursday at the

School of the Nations.

Diamond Fire and General Insurance Company and the School of the Nations for granting the use of their facilities for both the Qualifying event and the upcoming National Championships.
