A five-wicket haul from Veerasammy Permaul followed by a blistering knock from Kevin Sinclair spurred Berbice to a three-wicket win over the Select XI in the second round of the Guyana Cricket Board’s senior Inter-County limited overs competition yesterday.

The Select XI won the toss and opted to take first strike at the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda, posting  188 for nine from their full complement of 50 overs. Berbice then reached 191 for seven in 39.5 overs to register their second win of the tournament.

The seasoned veteran, Permaul, led Berbice’s bowling attack with 5-40 while fellow left-arm spinner, Gudakesh Motie, off-spinner, Kevin Sinclair and seamer, Nial Smith each had one wicket.

Kevin Sinclair continues to show his versatility with bat and ball bowling Berbice to victory in their opening match against Demerara and then batting his team to victory yesterday against the Select XI.

Raymond Perez steadied the Select XI’s batting with a top score of 52 from 60 balls, stroking six boundaries before he was bowled by Motie. The former West Indies youth batsman shared in a 44-run stand for the first wicket with Sachin Singh (two) and followed with a 35-run stand for the second wicket with Joshua Persaud (21). This laid the foundation for Christopher Barnwell to come in and smash two sixes and three fours on his way to an even half-century. Extras accounted for 19 while Carlos LaRose (15) and Suresh Dhanai (14) had late cameos.

Berbice lost Rampertab Ramnauth for a five-ball duck and Kevlon Anderson for a second-ball duck but Sinclair struck a robust  81 from 75 balls. He stroked nine fours and three sixes while sharing a 75-run union with Seon Glasgow (22) and a 59-run partnership with Nigel Deodat (30) for the fifth wicket.

Veerasammy Permaul snatched a
five-for to help Berbice dismiss the Select XI for a manageable score which they overhauled for the loss of seven wicket.

Seon Hetmyer also chipped in with a 52-ball 31. Berbicians, Isai Thorne and Jonathan Rampersaud picked up one wicket each for the Select XI.
