Pompey loses split decision to Antigua and Barbuda’s Aska

Guyana’s Emmanuel Pompey lost his debut bout at the Pan American Games in Santiago, Chile yesterday as the Guyana five member boxing suffered another L.

Competing in the round of 16 92 kg bout at the Olympic Training Centre, Pompey lost by a split decision to Antigua’s Tabukuo Aska with the judges scoring the bout,  29-28, 30-27, 28-29, 30-27 and 30-27 in favor of Aska. 

According to reports, the fight was close with Pompey showing flashes of brilliance.

On Thursday, Guyana’s Alesha Jackman lost to Argentina’s Noelia Lucia Perez in a round of 16, 66 kg-division encounter.

However, Guyana’s Keevin Allicock won his bout against Irvin Javier Mona Ibarguen of Paraguay also on Thursday.

Today Guyana’s Desmond Amsterdam, who along with Allicock, are this country’s best hopes for medals in the discipline, will face off against Gabriel Buonarrigo of Argentina in a round of 16 encounter in the 80kg-division.

That fight will take place at 13:30h

Also in action today will be swimmer Raekwon Noel who will compete in heat one of the men’s 400m freestyle event and taekwondo athlete, Cecili Peterson who will compete in the women’s Kyorugi – 49 kg event.

Guyana’s national badminton champion, Priyanna Ramdhani will compete in the women’s singles round of 32 against Brazil’s Juliana Vieira from 18.30h.

The 20-year-old Pompey, following his defeat, says that he recognizes that he has to work harder if he wants to be successful internationally.
