Alex Leung and Savannah Hyles were the first cyclists to claim gold medals when action in the 61st edition of the National Schools Cycling, Swimming, and Track and Field Championships got underway yesterday morning.

The pair earned the spoils of the Open Boys (40km) and Girls (25km) road races staged on the outer circuit of the National Park.

Racing just against the clock, Leung of District 11 clocked a brisk 1:06:82s in his event despite the inclement weather. The 15-year-old who attends Christchurch Secondary School has displayed sublime form on the saddle throughout the season and continues to grab the headlines and add to his palmares.

Leung, who triumphed by more than three minutes yesterday, had received the winner’s trophy and a hamper a day earlier for being the top junior rider when the Guyana Cycling Federation held its award ceremony in Campbellville. In yesterday’s race, Leung, who won in wire-to-wire fashion, led District Seven’s Sebastian Nathan and Ajani Cutting from District 14’s onto the podium. Meanwhile, Hyles stopped the clock in 57:56.48s to win her event after outsprinting Suria Duncan in the final 200m.

The District 10 standout from Christianburg/Wismar Secondary led Duncan of District 6 and District Nine’s Coreen Mandook into the top three. Cycling action in this year’s ‘Nationals’ will continue this morning inside the National Park.
