West Demerara side Slingerz FC have moved closer to Elite League Status

West Coast Demerara Outfit Slingerz Football Club moved one step closer to their goal of regaining Elite League Status with a routine 3-0 win over Upper Demerara hopefuls Winners Connection as the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League Promotional Playoffs continued last night at the Eve Leary Ground in Georgetown.

With a spot in Guyana’s premier football tier at stake. It was business as usual for Slingerz FC.

A first half brace from the popular winger ‘Shines’ Simeon Moore dictated the proceedings and left no doubt as to who would progress. The game attended by a smattering of fans was dull with Slingerz hogging possession and passing at will as the Winners Connection XI ran around much like headless chickens.

Berbicians Monedderlust FC won a hard fought 3-2 win over Georgetown’s Beacons FC to move into the GFF Promotional Final against Slingerz FC

Moore’s first goal came with a breathless run down the flank which he coolly put in the back of the net in the 26th minute to put Slingerz in the deserved lead. After regulation time in the first half had expired, additional time found Moore in the thick of things again, netting a loose ball in the 48th minute to send Slingerz 2-0 ahead at the break.

Much of the same monotone followed in the second half, however Winners Connection did well not to concede until injury time again after the second 45 minutes had expired as the tenacious teenage sensation Bryan Wharton netted in the 93rd minute to seal Slingerz’s progression.

In the second semifinal of the night Monedderlust of Berbice also had a light outing, dispatching Beacons FC of Georgetown 3-2.

It was a night of one-sided affairs with the Berbicians getting past the Beacons custodian in the 38th minute through the boot of Kevon Cottoy. That was preceded by Antony ‘Awo’ Abrams’ 33rd minute strike along with Dominic Nelson’s 43rd minute strike. After the break, trailing 2-1, the Berbicians would equalize through Terrence Lewis who netted for the Berbicians eight minutes after the break to put them square.

They would leave it late to forge ahead as Teron Daniels popped up for a loose ball in the goal area in the 83rd minute to win for his side.

After the final, GFF Competitions Director Troy Peters expressed his pleasure at the level of football played at far.  Slingerz will face Monedderlust in the final with the loser having to play 9th place finishers of the 2022/23 season for the other available spot. The winners of the promotional playoffs will qualify for the Elite League.
