The Guyana Police Force (GPF) arrested Cougars by a 2-0 score-line to win the annual Candy Boss and Antics GT Beer 8-a-side Football Championship, which was staged on Saturday evening at the All Saints Scott Church ground, Princess Elizabeth Road, in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
Following a scoreless first half period, the contest was effectively decided, as the lawmen recorded two goals in the space of four minutes. Pernell Schultz opened the scoring in the 47th minute with a sublime curling right-footed strike from 21 yards outside the penalty area in the centre of the field.
Nicholas MacArthur then sealed the win in the 51st minute, as he raced onto a through pass inside the penalty area before slamming his effort past the goalkeeper.
Due to the outcome, GPF walked away with $400,000 and the championship trophy, while the loser pocketed $200,000 and the corresponding accolade.
Meanwhile, Dynamic of East Coast Demerara defeated Monedderlust 2-1 in the third-place playoff. Adam Gonsalves opened the scoring for Dynamic in the 17th minute, before Tyrice Dennis doubled their lead in the 34th minute. Elli Nurse recorded a consolation goal in the 48th minute. With the win, Dynamic walked away with $100,000 and the corresponding trophy.
On the individual side of the presentation, Schultz was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) accolade and $50,000 for his exploits throughout the competition. Similarly, Dane Johnson of the Cougars won the Best Goalkeeper title. He also received $50,000. Likewise, Ray Reddock of the Cougars secured the Highest Goal Scorer accolade and $50,000.
