Rollot Roweley, 33, of Lot 258 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown, appeared before Principal Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday where he was charged with uttering a forged instrument.

It is alleged that on November 1, 2022, at Camp Street, Georgetown, with the intent to defraud, Roweley uttered to Lennox Hopkinson an employee at Republic Bank Limited, a forged Republic Bank cheque, numbered 000000033 and valued $800,000 knowing that it was forged.

Roweley pleaded guilty with explanation, however on advice from his legal counsel, he recanted and pled not guilty. The attorney told the magistrate that his client had no knowledge of the cheque being forged and it was only when he got to the bank that it was discovered to be such. He also took issue with the timeline of when the alleged crime was committed stating that upon the instructions of his client, he was informed that the incident occurred on October 7, 2022.

The prosecutor did not object to bail but requested the defendant be placed on a bond and continue visiting the Brickdam Police Station every fortnight.

Roweley was granted bail in the sum of $100,000.

The matter was adjourned to January 31st.
