I cannot help but feel that the timing and nature of the recent proposals put forth by the opposition leader of the PNCR in relation to the 2024 budget are more aligned with electioneering for the 2025 elections rather than a meaningful debate on the current budget. While it is crucial for political leaders to actively engage in discussions about the budget, the proposals, as announced on television, seem to focus extensively on issues that would be more relevant to a political campaign rather than a thorough examination of the budgetary allocations and priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. With the elections still two years away, it is disheartening to witness a diversion from substantive budget discussions that are essential for the well-being and progress of the Guyanese people.
It is important for political leaders to prioritize the immediate concerns of the country, especially when it comes to the budget. This includes addressing pressing issues such as economic recovery, social welfare, and infrastructure development. While I understand the necessity for political parties to prepare for future elections, it is equally crucial for them to fulfill their responsibilities as representatives of the people in the present moment. The recent shuffling of shadow portfolios around by the opposition leader is tantamount to shuffling the chairs on the Titanic, a distraction from actively engaging in discussions that directly contribute to shaping a budget with the focus to address the current needs and challenges faced by a newly oil rich nation. The citizens deserve a thorough examination of the budget that goes beyond political posturing and ensures that the allocation of resources is in the best interest of the country as a whole.
