Twenty-nine year old Yoel Guzman, a Venezuelan migrant, appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with damage to property.

It was alleged that on January 15, 2024, at Cummings Street, Bourda, Georgetown, he unlawfully and maliciously damaged a caravan valued $800,000, property of Lindon Gibson. He was also charged with maliciously causing damage to a gas stove valued at $8000, one microwave

valued at $11,000, one fridge valued at $140,000, one freezer valued at $80,000, 4 cases of banks valued at $44,560, four cases of Guinness valued at $48,000, four cases of GT beer valued at $30,700, one hundred soup bowls valued at $9,000, one hundred large food boxes valued at $7,000, one hundred burger boxes valued at $6,000 and a quantity of sodas valued at $26,400, property of Michael Johnson.

The charges were read to Guzman with the assistance of an interpreter to which he pleaded not guilty. The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds of the nature and gravity of the offence. The prosecution stated that Guzman did not provide the police with an address of a fixed place of abode and the court was informed that if released it is feared the police may not be able to locate him. The prosecution also stated that they have video footage implicating the defendant. As a result Guzman was refused bail and was remanded to prison. He will make his next court appearance on February 13, 2024, for disclosure of statements.
