Camp St accident victim succumbs to injuries

Temeca Kerr, a 28-year-old of Lot 377 Charlotte Street, Georgetown, one of the persons injured in an accident on the morning of February 25 at the intersection of Camp Street and Brickdam, George-town, succumbed to her injuries yesterday morning at the Liliendaal Hospital.

The police had reported that the accident occurred around 4.30 am on February 25 and involved motor car, PWW 7944 owned and driven by Kerr with occupants, Shamar Vickerie, 27, of Lot 111 D’Urban Street, Georgetown; Sharese Gaskin, 28, of 387 Section ‘D’ Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, and Amanda Campbell, 42, of Lot 147 West Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, Georgetown, and motor lorry, GMM 9622, owned and driven by Deodatt Ramandat, 42, of Lot 38 Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.

Investigations revealed that the driver of the lorry was proceeding east along Brickdam at a fast rate, while the traffic light signal was flashing red in his direction at the intersection of Camp Street. At the same time, the driver of the motor car was proceeding north along Camp Street with the traffic light signal flashing amber in her direction at the intersection. Both drivers continued to proceed in their respective directions and failed to comply with the traffic light signal resulting in the vehicles colliding. Both vehicles were extensively damaged, while the driver of the car and all of its occupants sustained injuries.

Kerr, the driver of the car, along with two of its occupants were conscious while the other occupant, Campbell, was unconscious. They were all picked up by EMTs and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital. Kerr was later transferred to the Liliendaal Public Hospital ICU, while Gaskin and Vickerie were discharged on March 1 and March 5 respectively. Campbell is currently a patient in the GPH female surgical ward; her condition is listed as stable.

However, at around 1.30 am yesterday, Kerr succumbed to her injuries at the Liliendaal Public Hospital. Her body is currently at the GPH mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.

A statement was taken from the driver of the lorry and a breathalyzer test was conducted on him. The result showed no trace of alcohol. The police explained that a breathalyzer test could not be conducted on Kerr due to the nature of her injuries. However, a Notice of Intended Prosecution was served on the driver of the lorry.

Checks were made in the area by investigators for CCTV cameras and video footage was obtained. Checks were also made for eyewitnesses but no one came forward. The driver was released on $150,000 station bail with the condition that he reports to the station every Wednesday of each week.

Investigations are ongoing.
