Hughes, Walton-Desir should consider running for the presidency

Dear Editor,

As Guyanese reflect on the political landscape of Guyana, it has been a quarter of a century since the remarkable tenure of Janet Jagan as the country’s first female president (1997 – 1999). Her leadership marked a significant milestone in the nation’s history, breaking barriers, and inspiring countless individuals, particularly women, to engage in politics and aspire to the highest offices.

As Guyanese approach the upcoming 2025 elections, it is crucial to consider the importance of diversity and representation in leadership. Guyana is a nation of rich cultural heritage and diverse perspectives, and it is imperative that the government reflects this diversity. Therefore, I believe it is time for Members of Parliament Catherine Hughes and Amanza Walton-Desir to step forward and consider running for the top office.

Both Catherine Hughes and Amanza Walton-Desir have demonstrated exceptional dedication and commitment to serving the nation. Their track records speak volumes about their leadership capabilities, integrity, and vision for a better Guyana. By putting themselves forward as candidates for the presidency, they have the opportunity to continue the legacy of Janet Jagan and further advance the cause of gender equality and representation in government.

Moreover, their candidacy would not only signal progress towards gender equality but also bring fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to the challenges facing our nation. As Guyanese navigate complex issues such as economic development, social equity, and environmental sustainability, they need leaders who can bring people together, foster dialogue, and drive meaningful change. Catherine Hughes and Amanza Walton-Desir possess the qualities needed to lead Guyana into a prosperous and inclusive future.

I urge the citizens of Guyana, especially women to support and encourage Catherine Hughes and Amanza Walton-Desir should they contemplate their candidacy for the presidency. Let all females embrace this opportunity to continue to shatter stereotypes and build a more equitable and inclusive society. Together, we can ensure that the voices of all Guyanese, regardless of gender, are heard and represented in government.

Sincerely,

Keith Bernard
