Eight athletes are scheduled to depart Guyana’s shores today in search of Olympic Games qualifying times and distances at an International Athletic Meet in French Guiana.

At the meet, which is named ‘The Games of Guyana’, a 4x100m team comprising of Emmanuel Archibald, Shemar Horatio, Akeem Stewart, Noelex Holder, Jaheel Cornette, and Kerion DeSouza will attempt to meet the qualifying standard for the upcoming Olympic Games slated for August later this year in Paris.

Additionally, Guyana’s lone javelin thrower, Leslain Baird, will also accompany the team in a bid to secure qualification in that event as well.

Individually, Holder and Archibald will look to secure passage to France in the 100m, while the latter will also make his bid in the 200m. Simeon Adams, on the other hand, will compete in the 400m event.

Accompanying the athletes will be Coach Junior Cornette, while the Athletics Association of Guyana’s General Secretary, James Cole, will manage the contingent.

The meet is slated to kick off on April 13 at the Dr. Edmar Lama Stadium in French Guiana.

The qualifying standard for the men’s 100m is 10s flat, while the 200m will require a time of 20.16. The men’s 400m will see athletes have to make the distance in 45 seconds. For Baird to earn qualification for Paris, he will need to land the javelin at a distance of 85.50m.
