Future Warriors tape-ball championship set for Essequibo schools

The Essequibo edition of the Future Warriors Primary Schools Tape-ball Cricket Championship was officially launched yesterday at the ExxonMobil office in Kingston.

The event, which featured iterations in Georgetown, and Berbice, will be staged at the Imam Bacchus Ground at Affiance starting tomorrow. It will conclude on Sunday.

The 12 competing teams are: Lake Mainstay, Charity, Taymouth Manor, Queenstown, Suddie, Aurora, C.V. Nunes, 8th of May, Good Hope, Huis T’ Dieren, Hampton Court, and Fisher.

Coordinated by FL Sports and sponsored by ExxonMobil, the event will utilise an elimination format, with each team fielding 11 players from a squad of 13. Each side will be allotted eight overs per inning.

At the conclusion of the first day, the three remaining teams will return and contest a group stage format. The event commences at 8:30 a.m. on both match days.

The winner of the tournament will receive several pieces of equipment for tape-ball cricket and also earn a berth to the ‘champion of champions’ competition. Stella Maris and Cropper are the defending Georgetown and Berbice champions, respectively.

Community Relations Advisor for ExxonMobil Guyana, Ryan Hoppie, charged the competing teams to use the tournament as a possible stepping stone in their aspirations to represent Guyana or possibly the West Indies.

Meanwhile, Co-Director of FL Sport John Ramsingh stated that he is confident in the tournament being a success, noting that he envisions the unearthing of several notable talents during the event.
