Letters to the Editor

Young people of Fort Island and surrounding communities warned about the abuse of drugs

Dear Editor, Facilitated by the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, and Region Three’s Culture Youth and Sport Division, the communities of Fort Island, Lower Bonasika, Bendaff and Hubu in collaboration with the National Amerindian Development Foundation (NADF) last week began the observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day) early by shouting a message of ‘No to drugs!’

When will the stelling be ready for the people of Region Two?

Dear Editor, The numerous problems that have plagued the Supenaam Stelling have been well publicized and documented and up to this day it has not been determined with any degree of certainty who is to be blamed or whatever went wrong that caused the numerous delays in handing over, as well as the on-again, off-again manner in which this facility used to operate.

Ramjattan did not call for turmoil

Dear Editor, AFC Chairman Khemraj Ramjattan’s warning of unrest should government proceed with plans to increase electricity tariffs in Linden (SN, June 22), has been exploited by PPP apologists to mean Mr Ramjattan has called for turmoil or disorder.

There will not be violence on the streets in Linden

Dear Editor, I write to issue a severe reprimand to Brother Ramjattan and to correct a stereotype of Afrikans given by his reported statement to Demerara Waves that the foolhardy and ostrich-like intention to increase electricity rates in Linden could “create violence in the street.”

Parliament remains the supreme organ of the state

Dear Editor, Having followed the ongoing discussions regarding President Ramotar’s threat that he will not assent to any bill that the opposition carries unless it is with the “full agreement of the executive and the full involvement of the executive,” I’d like to state the following as per the Guyana Constitution: a) Article 50 outlines, “The supreme organs of democratic power in Guyana shall be – i) the Parliament; ii) the President; and iii) the Cabinet.”

No mention of increased production in the sugar industry

Dear Editor, “President Donald Ramotar on Saturday last reiterated his call for unity in the sugar industry and commitment to working with the industry and all associated stakeholders to ensure that it continues to play a central role in the economy in order that many of the services that were provided in the past, can continue.”

Wrote on corruption more than a year ago

Dear Editor, I have read with great interest the many comments made in relation to the news item carried by SN (June 17) which highlighted an article I wrote for the Weekend Mirror on ‘Corruption – The Time Has Come To Take Action.’
