Reforming Guyana’s sugar industry

Part I A few readers (I suspect primarily students) have asked me, when presenting my reform proposals, to also undertake two brief tasks, namely: 1) sum up my views as to whether the Sugar Modernization Project (SSMP) ever made sense from its inception; and 2) offer a few observations on a number of the other proposals for reforming the sugar industry that have surfaced during the years of the PPP/C administration.

Some Latin countries among world’s least corrupt

One of the most interesting things about the latest 174-country ranking of world corruption released recently by the Berlin-based Trans-parency International monitoring group was that Barbados, Chile and Uruguay ranked alongside the United States among the world’s 20 most honest countries.

What not to do to pets during the festive season

(1) Incorrect feeding Humans seem to have this fixation with over-stuffing themselves during festive season (perhaps that’s why it’s called a festive season); and we then carry our gourmand self-indulgence over to the pets.

A Symbol of Christmas

Poinsettias have become a symbol of Christmas.  The poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) is originally from Mexico where it was grown by the Aztecs of Central Mexico as a shrub many centuries before it was introduced to the United States by Joel Poinsett – hence the name. 

Tamandua

The Southern Tamandua or Tamandua (Tamandua tetradactyla) is classified as a “true anteater”; other true anteaters in Guyana include the Giant Anteater and Silky Anteater, both of which have been featured in this column previously.
