GPL management should be accountable for poor service – Jagdeo

President Bharrat Jagdeo says he is dissatisfied with the level of service the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) has been offering consumers and that he expects the company’s senior management to be more accountable.

“Since I came back, this is the report I got, that things have deteriorated in terms of the frequency of blackout. They had to do maintenance, and that is routine, but that is unacceptable to me too,” Jagdeo said in an interview with the National Communications Network.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) press release the president also said that GPL informed him that the Skeldon Factory was “undergoing some problems with the supply of power.” He said too he had seen a letter from Region Six Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha on the matter which he forwarded to GPL Chairman Winston Brassington who said that routine maintenance was being conducted in the Demerara System.

Jagdeo said about US$40M was spent to build the transmission main… “another (US$30M) to put in our plant that will go in some time next year in Kingston. That’s a large power plant that will use heavy fuel oil and also some of the money to convert other diesel units to HFO so we can have a greater saving on fuel.”

In light of this Jagdeo said he expected “more rigid systems of management and some people held more accountable for their portfolios for what they are doing.”
