Husband remanded, wife put on bail over cocaine trafficking

A husband was remanded to jail while his wife was placed on $300,000 bail when they appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octave-Hamilton charged with possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.

Adwin Bartlet

Adwin Bartlet and Samantha Daniels both pleaded not guilty to having in their possession 737 and a half grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking on Sunday at Lamaha Street.

Representing the duo, attorney-at-law Sasha Roberts told the court that Daniels, the number two accused, has no knowledge of the matter but was just picked up by the police.

Roberts in her bid for bail for Daniels told the court that she was a lactating mother with an eight-month-old baby and she required urgent medical attention for her breasts which were hurting from the unused milk.

The magistrate then told Roberts that she would give her a bottle to get the milk out and send to the child.

The defence counsel went on to say that her client was not a flight risk and had no previous brush with the law.

Meanwhile in her bid for bail for the number one accused, Bartlet, Roberts told the court that she was instructed by him that the police were trying to set him up. She said he was not a flight risk and he had a fixed place of abode at 73 Lamaha Street, Georgetown with no previous convictions.

Police prosecutor Shellon Daniels, however, strongly objected to bail for both defendants on the grounds that Bartlet had admitted ownership of the drugs and no special reason was provided for the number two accused.

Daniels said that on the day in question the police went to the Lamaha Street residence to conduct a raid and were allowed into the home by the number one accused.

The cocaine was found in the gas stove in the kitchen. Upon discovery of the drugs, Daniels said, Bartlet told the police, “This cocaine is me own. I does do me lil hustle please leff my family out of this.”

Bartlet and Daniels will return to Court Five on April 19 when their trial is scheduled to commence.
