Denise Hilliman remanded on theft charge

Magistrate Judy Latchman remanded a 44-year-old woman accused of stealing items valued $115,000 from another when she on Tuesday appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on January 8, at Croal Street, Georgetown, Denise Hilliman, being together with others stole a number of school bags, brassieres and ladies’ bags, all totalling $115,000, the property of Jiang Ping Ren.

Hilliman pleaded not guilty to the charge.

No facts of what occurred on the day in question were related in court. However, in her defence, Hilliman said that she was overseas during the time the robbery occurred.

“I am not lying down for a crime I didn’t do. I was living in Suriname and French Guiana when I heard about this thing. I did not steal from these Chinese people,” she said.

When asked, the prosecutor objected to bail on the grounds that the woman has a criminal record. Hilliman was remanded and ordered to appear in court on March 6.
