The Ministry of Education has been conducting a five-day basketball workshop to train teachers from all 10 regions in the basic fundamentals for the new physical education Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) syllabus.

Under the guidance of Guyana Amateur Basket-ball Federation (GABF) Technical Coordinator Cecil Chin, the workshop which runs from Monday July 15th to Friday July 19th is currently being facilitated at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Mandela Avenue from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Chin stated that the purpose of the venture is to train the teachers on what will be required for the new CXC syllabus which will be effective from May-June 2014.

“Basketball is one of the disciplines many Caribbean Examinations Council students will be undertaking in the physical education examinations and through this programme the teachers will be better equipped to relate to the fundamentals of the discipline to students” added Chin.

According to Chin, a team of officials comprising current national coaches Lugard Mohan, Mark Agard and international level two coach Ann Gordon will instruct the 14 participants on the three sections of the basketball aspect of the syllabus which are skills, playing positions and tactics.

“In the skills section we will cover passing, catching, dribbling, shooting and footwork while in the playing positions segment we will highlight all the respective positions and their functions. Finally we will cover tactics on both the offensive and defensive side from an individual, group and team perspective”, noted Chin.

In closing Chin stated while we would have been happy for the programme to be longer, thanks must be given to the Allied Arts Department of the Ministry of Education for having the foresight in bringing this initiative to reality.

“The entire team is absolutely pleased with the participants and their willingness to learn as they have given up a week of their hard-earned end-of-term leave to be here and the sport will definitely benefit from this workshop”, added Chin.
