Diamond Housing Scheme ‘cocaine smoker’ remanded to prison on burglary charges

A Diamond Housing Scheme man who denied any knowledge of stealing items worth over half a million dollars because he was “smoking cocaine” was remanded to prison when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates Court on Thursday.

Inshan Ali, 32, of Diamond Housing Scheme, stood in the prisoners dock mumbling to himself as the charges were read to him. Ali is accused of breaking and entering the business place of Forbes Christian and stealing a generator valued at $40,000, and a tool kit valued at $45,000, between April 2 and April 3, 2015, on Croal Street.

He is further accused of breaking and entering the business place of Rodlyn Austin and stealing a gas stove valued at $75,000, a gas bottle valued at $11,000, and other items adding up to a total of $482,200 between April 4 and April 5, 2015, on Croal Street.

When asked to state his plea by Magistrate Judy Latchman, the man stated: “I was smoking cocaine, I don’t know anything. I glad fuh go to jail. I want yuh lock me up.”

When asked by Latchman whether he stole the items, Ali denied doing so and pleaded not guilty to the two charges.

The prosecution objected to bail given the seriousness of the matter, the penalty it attracts, and the fact that Ali was seen by eyewitnesses.

Ali was denied bail and remanded to prison. His next court date is April 15, 2015.
