Although he is not yet out of danger, a man who was recently stabbed by a former friend with a broken bottle is considering not offering any evidence against his assailant.  Rajesh Lall, a 21-year-old miner, of Airy Hall, Essequibo Coast, was stabbed on November 7th at Stonehill Backdam, Cuyuni with a broken bottle.

Lall said he was drinking at a shop around 2 am when his assailant, who has since been charged with attempted murder and was remanded to prison, came from behind and attacked.

When the man realised that Lall “didn’t fall,” he allegedly attempted to inflict another wound to his neck. Lall said he blocked the attempt “with my hand. Is this hand that saved me.”

By then he fell to the ground, bleeding. The owner of the shop gave him a rag, which helped to ease the bleeding. Around 6 am the police from Buck Hall were passing and they took him to the Suddie Hospital, eight hours away. All the while, Lall was still losing blood.

He said both wounds were “very deep” and that by the time he got to the hospital, doctors were unable to stitch them. He is in tremendous pain and is afraid that the wound to his throat will “become infected” and that “pieces of the bottle” have been left in his neck.

According to him, only a CT-scan can determine how serious the wound is but he is not sure if the doctors at Suddie would recommend that. But even though he is fighting for his life, Lall said he is willing to forgive his attacker and may not offer evidence against him.

“God gave me a chance to live and I want to give him a chance because he is young too,” he told this newspaper. The two men were friends and the attack is alleged to have stemmed from a three-month-old grievance.
