Marcus Keiler capped a long but successful cycling season yesterday when he won the 20th Diamond Mineral Water 40-mile road race at West Demerara.

The Team Coco’s wheelsman outsprinted his breakaway mates Curtis Dey, Walter Grant-Stuart and Deeraj Garbarran, for victory in the trek which started near the Demerara Harbour Bridge, proceeded to Parika and returned to the point of origin for the finish.

He stopped the clock in 1hr: 45.30.

National cyclists, Jamaul John and Michael Anthony completed the top positions.

As the curtains came down on the 2019 cycling season, it was Keiler who proved to be the fastest in his first signature win of the year out of a six-man breakaway that dominated the race.

The win will be a hugely significant one for the cyclist in terms of building his confidence for next season.

Finishing in the top six in numerous races during his 2019 campaign was an encouraging sign, but there’s nothing like the morale boost of a race win.  Keiler will no doubt be looking forward to more success on the saddle in 2020 and beyond. Meanwhile, in the event which attracted 29 starters, Ian Jackson, Kwame Ridley and Alex Mendes were the top three veterans. Jamal Capell and Patrick Alphonso were the top two Mountain Bikers.
