A Linden man will have to face another trial after a jury yesterday failed to reach a verdict on charges of rape levelled against him.

Fifty-nine-year-old Carlyle Williams of Blueberry Hill, Wismar, Linden, was facing two counts of rape. The first charge stated that Williams on October 14th, 2017, at Wismar, Linden engaged in sexual activity with a teenager. The second charge alleged that he on October 15th, 2017, at the same location engaged in sexual activity with the teen.

It is alleged that on the first day in question, Williams was in bed with the teen reading to her and then raped her. On the following day it is alleged that he went into the teen’s bedroom and raped her. The teen subsequently told her mother and the incidents were reported to the police.

When the matter was called yesterday at the High Court in Georgetown, Williams, who was represented by attorney Ravindra Mohabir, denied the charges. Following about two hours of deliberations, a 12-member jury failed to arrive at a verdict.

Justice Jo Ann Barlow told Williams that he will have to face another trial at the next practical sitting of the Demerara Assizes. The man will remain out on bail until the new trial commences.
