After more than a month of evading the police, the suspect said to have stabbed Latoya Haywood resulting in her death surrendered herself at the Brickdam Police Station early yesterday morning in the company of her lawyer.

Since the Christmas Day incident, the suspect had been on the run. Commander Edgar Thomas had said that the police had gone in search of the woman on several occasions but were unable to find her.

Haywood, who was stabbed in the region of the heart on Christmas Day, succumbed to her injuries last Thursday afternoon after being in an almost-month-long coma. Latoya had spent the night at a Breda Street party with relatives and friends in the run-up to the incident. Things turned sour when she had approach-ed the father of her cousin’s child and asked him to buy her a drink. This angered the suspect, who is the man’s current girlfriend. Shortly after, the cousin, Tenisha Favorite, turned up at the scene, and got into an argument with the suspect. As the suspect was being driven away from the scene, she attempted to stab Favorite with a knife, but ended up stabbing Haywood instead.

An autopsy was performed on Haywood on Monday by state pathologist Nehaul Singh.

Commander Thomas on Monday had indicated that the boyfriend of the suspect was arrested on Saturday in connection with Haywood’s death and was at the time in police custody assisting the investigation.
