T&T driver charged with causing cyclist’s death

Akidu Isaiah McPhee, the driver involved in the accident that claimed the life of Navindra Dhoray at Liliendaal, along the Rupert Craig Highway last week, was charged with causing death by dangerous driving and remanded to prison on Monday.

McPhee, a Trinidadian national who has been residing at Oronoque Street, Queenstown, made his appearance before Magistrate Melissa Mittelholzer at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court on the causing death by dangerous driving charge.

He was refused bail and ordered to make his next court appearance on September 28.

Dhoray, 40, of Lot 101 Block ‘F,’ Sophia, died after he was struck by a speeding pick-up while riding his bicycle. He sustained injuries to his body, including to his head, and as a result he died on the spot.

Hemwantie Dhoray, the widow of the deceased, told Stabroek News that he was on his way home when he met his demise.

She said he had asked to retire early from his job as a handyman with intention of purchasing a phone chip.

When asked how she was coping, she said was not.

Her parents, who were present when she spoke with this newspaper, added that they were concerned about her health due to her not eating. They also disclosed that the couple’s five-year-old son was increasingly asking for his father.

Navindra, who was the sole breadwinner for his family, was described as a helpful and family-oriented person.

The family said they are hoping that they will receive justice.

Traffic Chief Ramesh Ashram had said that the accident occurred around 1 pm outside of Yokohama Trading.

According to Ashram, their investigations revealed that a pick-up truck, GTT 8153, was proceeding west along the Rupert Craig Highway, at a fast rate. As it approached Yokohama Trading, the driver undertook a minibus and collided with Navindra Dhoray, who was proceeding in the same direction.

As a result, the driver lost control and collided with Yokohama Trading fence. The vehicle then turned turtle before it came to a halt.
