CIOG says Eid ul Fitr to be celebrated tomorrow

The Central Islamic Organisation of Guyana this evening advised Muslims that the moon crescent for the month of Shawwal has been sighted and therefore Eid ul Fitr, commemorating the end of the Ramadan fasting period, will be celebrated tomorrow, Thursday, May 13th.

UK’s PM Johnson announces COVID-19 public inquiry

LONDON, (Reuters) – Prime Minister Boris Johnson today announced an inquiry next year into the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic that is likely to focus on why the United Kingdom suffered Europe’s worst death toll and was so slow initially to impose a lockdown.

Third cease order served on concrete facility

With no permission granted for the construction of a concrete manufacturing facility adjacent to South Ruimveldt Gardens, the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) and the Ministry of Housing and Water have served orders to the principals of the development to cease operations.

GECOM meeting on US elections project aborted

A meeting between the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and the International Republican Institute (IRI) to discuss a US-funded electoral reform project was aborted after Opposition-nominated commissioners objected to the manner in which the project was introduced to the Commission.

Paintings still to be returned from the Netherlands

Dear Editor, I have been reluctant to make a public plea for the return of a painting from the Netherlands that belongs to me but it is now nearly six months that it has been packed and readied to be returned – along with other art pieces from Guyana – except that the shipping fees, from what I gather, are still to be paid.
