Driver fined $20,000 over unlicensed and uncertified pick-up after deadly Farm accident

The driver who was involved in the fatal accident which claimed the life of 12-year-old Varshanie Ramroop was on Friday fined after pleading guilty to charges of driving an unlicensed and uncertified pick-up.

Benjamin Parks, of Windsor Estates, East Bank Demerara, pleaded guilty to driving an unlicensed motor vehicle and driving an uncertified motor vehicle when he appeared before a magistrate at the Leonora Magistrate Court.

He was fined $10,000 for each charge.

Parks has not been faced as yet with a causing death allegation.

The fatal accident occurred last Tuesday at Farm, East Bank Essequibo, where Ramroop was hit by while crossing the Farm Public Road. It was reported by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) that the accident occurred at 3pm when the child had just disembarked a minibus on the southern side of the road. She was crossing the road in front of the minibus when she was hit by the pick-up, GX7522, driven and owned by Parks.

According to the police, Ramroop fell on the road surface as a result of the hit and she suffered severe head injuries. She was picked up in an unconscious state and escorted by police to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival by the doctor on duty.

On the day after the girl’s death, her family was visited by members of the Guyana Police Force at Regional Division #3. The GPF said that the 12-year-old’s family was visited at their Parika Façade, East Bank Essequibo home by Deputy Commander of Regional Division # 3, Superintendent Boodnarine Persaud, Traffic Officer Inspector Isaacs and Pastor Medas from the Cop and Faith Network along with a team of Police.

The police said that during the visit, the team assured family members and relatives of the deceased that a thorough investigation will be done. The family was told that no stone will be left unturned, the police stated.
