A minibus driver has been found guilty of two counts of raping a minor between 2014 and 2015.

Inteaz Mohamed, called ‘Uncle Shameer,’ of Success, East Coast Demerara, was yesterday found guilty of raping the now 21-year-old woman when she was 15.

Following hours of deliberations, the jury returned verdicts, convicting the man on two counts of rape of a child under 16. By a majority of 10 to 1 for both counts, the jurors found the man guilty of the offences.

The first charge stated that between September 1, 2014 and September 30, 2014, in the county of Demerara, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of 16. The second charge stated that between January 1, 2015 and January 31, 2015, he engaged in sexual penetration with a child under the age of 16.

Following Mohamed’s conviction, defence attorney Latchmie Rahamat requested that a probation report on her client be presented to the court before the sentencing.

Justice Brassington Reynolds, who presided over the trial at the High Court, allowed the request and deferred the sentencing until July 2 at 3pm. State Prosecutor Sarah Martin also indicated to the court that a victim impact statement will be prepared for that date.

According to the prosecutor’s facts, in September 2014, the accused picked the victim up from her lessons and took her to Turkeyen road, where MovieTowne is now located, and held a knife to her and told her not to scream. He then raped her. Afterward, he threatened to kill both of them if she told anyone. He also told her he would be charged with rape if she talked.

In January 2015, the prosecutor said, Mohamed again picked the girl up from lessons and drove to the Turkeyen location and raped her again. He had the same knife in the vehicle as he did before and he threatened to kill her and himself if she told anyone what had happened.

Mohamed maintained that he was innocent of the charge.
