Adams banks on game-changers to defend T20 title

Former West Indies captain, Jimmy Adams is hopeful that the West Indies could defend their T20 World title later this month on the backs of their game-changers.

The 53-year-old gave his outlook on the tournament earlier this week on the Mason and Guest radio programme, which will see reigning champions ahead of the West Indies title defence which begins October 23 against England.

“We all have high hopes,” he said. “We think that the ability is there to win games. I think one of the things that excite me, is that we have match-winners, we have people who can turn a game inside out in two [or] three overs,” he stated.

The left-handed stroke maker added, “It’s not guesswork. They have done it and they’ve done it for a long time.

He continued, “The key for me is to make sure we have everybody fit, physically, mentally in a good place and from thereon like everybody in the region. We have high hopes of success from this group of players.”

While players have raised concerns over the mentally tasking environment of the bio-secure conditions, Adams indicated that West Indies have had the service of psychologists touring with them dating back to March 2020.

Both, Chris Gayle and West Indies captain, Kieron Pollard, have been outspoken on the topic with the core of West Indies T20 World Cup squad moving through four series and the Caribbean Premier League prior to the international event. Some have also been part of the Indian Premier League’s second leg.

Adams detailed, “The initial feedback is that the players are in a really good space. The bubble life isn’t easy as we know but all things taken into consideration. All those persons who left the Caribbean would have finished their six days in quarantine so those who are down there have been playing cricket and have been outside.”
