Rice lands in Dartmouth in Region Two are currently inundated as the region continues to experience high rainfall.

Two sluices are also currently under repair and are blamed as factors in the flooding of the farmlands and a high build-up of water in the Lima community. According to farmers who are cultivating rice in the Dartmouth area their crops are in the preparatory phase and they are concerned. Residents in Lima Housing Scheme are currently underwater and according to residents, the water has not shown signs of receding. Poultry coops and kitchen gardens are currently under water and owners are now counting their losses.

Vendors at Suddie Market say sales were also affected after the market was flooded. Prompt actions by the Regional Administration led to water receding quickly and vendors were able to continue their trade.

“When we came to the market the entire place flooded, we reach like 4 in the morning, we called the Chairman of the NDC early and a machine was sent to the area to assist,” a vendor said. Regional Vice Chairman Humace Oodit said that several pumps are currently in operation at Hampton Court, Anna Regina, Lima, and Charity. A mini-excavator is currently operating in various areas to clear clogged-up drains. He said that rangers and the Region’s engineers, and regional officials are on the ground monitoring the situation. The Pomeroon area has not been affected by flooding to date.

The Anna Regina Town Council has deployed a mini-excavator within the town. Several silted drains and trenches are currently being cleaned. Mayor of the town, Rajendra Prabhulall said that the council is working along with the Regional Administration to clean silted-up drains in the Windsor Castle and Danielstown communities.
