West Demerara squeaked past Essequibo/Pomeroon by a 1-0 scoreline when the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) U13 Challenge Series continued yesterday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora.

Delion Fredericks, the goalkeeper of the visiting outfit, proved to be a thorn in the side of the hosts, following a stellar performance between the uprights.

His presence was felt primarily in the second half, as he fashioned several key saves to deny the West Demerara side.

Fredericks denied Colin Frank-David in the 39th minute, parrying the resulting free-kick from outside the centre of  the 18-yard area around the left upright.

Frank-David was thwarted once more in the 43rd minute when Fredericks denied a powerful volleyball effort from inside the area at full stretch.

Nevertheless, Mickel Castillo settled the hard-fought contest in the 50th minute, breaking the deadlock with a brilliant strike past Fredericks.

Picking up the ball on the left side of the box, Castillo unleashed a powerful flat strike which evaded the grasp of the diving goalkeeper and settled into the right corner.

Similarly, Georgetown defeated Upper Demerara 1-0 at the National Training Centre, Providence.

Meanwhile, the West Demerara team was the recipient of traveling apparel donated by Krishna Mangal and Sons Sawmill and Lumberyard of Tuschen.
