5th GSCL PM Cup finals set for Providence

The Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc (GSCL) has been given the green light to host the 5th Prime Minister’s Cup from Friday with the finals set for the National Stadium, Providence Sunday.

The drawing for the 20-team, three-category tournament with over a million dollars in prizes at stake was  held Monday.

In the Over-50 Legends category, eight teams, divided into two groups will vie for glory.

In Group A, Floodlights, Regal Legends, Wellman Legends and NY Hustlers will compete while in Group B, Orlando Legends, NYSCL Legends, Rockaway Legends and Carpet Doctors will do battle.

In the Over-45 Masters division, six teams will be gunning for the title. In Group A, NY Cricket Doctors, Ariel Masters and Fisherman Masters will battle while while Group B features Success Masters, Essequibo Masters and Regal Masters.

In the Open division there are also six teams with Speedboat, Name Brand and Regal in Group A and Success, Airport and Ariel in Group B.

According to GSCL President Ian John, there will be 40 percent capacity at each venue with the Red and Green Stands at the National Stadiums being used.

Admission is free but persons will not be allowed to bring in coolers and will have to be equipped with their vaccination cards.

John said that venues across Georgetown for the preliminary rounds are yet to be finalized owing to the weather. However, sanitizers and masks will be required at each venue.

“We had a commitment with the Task Force to get this tournament off the ground and we have successfully accomplished that. As everyone would know COVID-19 has plagued not only Guyana but everyone throughout the world and it is import that we adhere to all the rules and regulations so as to ensure the smooth running of this tournament,” he said.

John added, “We had to meet with the Prime Minister, who is the Patron of this tournament and it was his discretion shown to ensure this tournament would be played on the 12th, 13th and 14th.”

Speedboat are the reigning Open champions while Fisherman Masters and Regal Legends are the respective champions for the Over-45 and Over-50 divisions.
