Venezuelan construction worker killed in hit and run

Police are investigating the death of a 37-year-old construction worker who was killed in a hit and run accident on Saturday night at Better Hope, East Coast Demerara.

Police are on the hunt for the driver and a white car reportedly involved in the accident.

The deceased has been identified as Lizardo Bastardo of Better Hope South, East Coast Demerara.

According to a police report, at about 11:55 pm, the white car was proceeding west on the southern carriageway on the East Coast Demerara Public Road at Better Hope when Bastardo attempted to cross the road from south to north and was struck by the car.

Sibling of the deceased, Exiobar Bastardo, who visited the scene of the accident identified the dead pedestrian as his brother.

An ambulance was summoned and Dr. Etwaroo attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

The body was afterwards taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home.

A cousin of the deceased, Mariela Hernandez, in a post on social media said it was sad news for the family and added that there are no words to express their pain.

Meanwhile, an article in Venezuela newspaper, ‘Tane Tanae Asi Pasó’ which reported on the hit and run, said that Bastardo who hails from Volcán de Tucupita in Venezuela migrated from the country in May of last year, in search of a better life for his three daughters who he left behind.
