I would like to highlight a serious problem in Sixth Street, Cummings Lodge. Right next to the Hindu Temple where three roads meet is a set of potholes that is affecting villagers, Industry residents, U.G students and the Mini Bus System that operates in these two villages. This eyesore started out as a few small holes about six months ago and has expanded to huge craters. I have attached a photograph which does not show the true depth of these craters since residents have filed them up with construction waste two months ago.
I have spoken to three Senior Officers of The Ministry of Public Works and all of them were understanding and seemed willing to help but they said I would need a letter from a Minister. Editor, this Government practiced this same system before 2015 which resulted in them being ousted from power. They do not believe in citizens being empowered to speak up for their rights and needs, you would have to arrange a neck garland opportunity before you get anything done. Money is not the problem now since only this week we netted US$120 million dollars from one sale of the people of Guyana’s oil. This is equal to 24 billion Guyana dollars.
This system of begging Ministers to get things done must stop but let me take this opportunity to beg the Minister of Local Government, Nigel Dharamlall, who lives a few houses away from this deplorable piece of road to step out of his yard, walk for two minutes in an easterly direction and forward an email to the relevant Ministry so that hundreds of drivers would no longer be inconvenienced. Thank you, Minister.
