Elton Dharry is in line for a shot at the British Commonwealth super flyweight title and that fight may be staged here in Guyana as early as next month or in December.

So said the prized pugilist who headlined the last mega boxing event which was held at the National Stadium in April.

Dharry told Stabroek Sport yesterday that he is the mandatory challenger to England’s Prince Patel’s belt and he is eager to put on a show once again in front of the local fans after unanimously defeating a game Orlando Penalba for the vacant WBC super-flyweight International six months ago.

According to Dharry, however, the title fight being staged here hinges on negotiations between the boxing board and the Ministry of Sport.

“I am just waiting on the answer from the boxing board and the Minister of Sport (Charles Ramson Jr.) if they will go forward and host the title fight in Guyana because I am the mandatory challenger for the belt.”

The USA-based Dharry added

“It is a great opportunity for me to fight at home in a big fight and it would be good for Guyana and its boxing as well, but right now I can only do what is in my power and that is stay training and staying focused.”

Dharry, 36, stated that he has his hard hat on in Gleason’s Gym with the intent to improve his record which stands at 26-6-1 whenever he gets his opportunity to face Patel.

“I am unsure if it will be in November or Boxing Day, it is up to the people that are in power to make it happen in Guyana. But I really want to get the British title fight and promote another card on Boxing Day.”

Dharry then disclosed that his ultimate aim is still to capture the elusive world title and will journey to Britain to fight Patel, 29, if he has to in order to put him closer on the road for another crack at the world title.

In 2019, Dharry fought for the WBA Super flyweight title. However, he lost to Andrew Maloney in the latter’s hometown of Melbourne, Australia in a controversial ninth-round stoppage after the ring side doctor stopped the fight which Dharry said he was dominating due to an eye injury.
