The Petra Organization yesterday presented the group stage prize money to the respective 12 teams in the MVP Sports Futsal Championship at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.

The prizes varied from $50,000 to $10,000 and were based on the teams’ final placement following the conclusion of the round-robin stage. Group winners Gold is Money, Stabroek Ballers, and Back Circle, were each presented with $50,000, while second place finishers Bent Street, Future Stars, and Campbellville, received $40,000 apiece.

On the other hand, Sparta Boss, Tiger Bay and Sophia walked away with $20,000 respectively, while cellar occupants Team Cruel, Mocha, and Vengy pocketed $10,000 each.

Petra Organization Co-Director, Troy Mendonca, said, “We wanted to reward every team, and we were considering the 12 teams from the earlier elimination rounds but budgetary constraints didn’t allow us. In the past we would have initiated this process based on positions in the group. Even though some of the teams didn’t go through, they must walk away with something instead of just participating and don’t get nothing.”

According to Mendonca, a unique aspect of the tournament was hinted at, which specifically refers to the payments to teams after the conclusion of the group stage round.

Meanwhile, the tournament continues tomorrow at the same venue with the quarterfinal section. In the men’s division, Gold is Money will oppose Sophia from 21.00 hours, while Bent Street tackles Campbellville at 22.00 hours, and Future Stars engage Sparta Boss at 23.00 hours. In the final fixture, Stabroek Ballers will lock horns with Back Circle at 24.00 hours.

In the women’s pool, Avocado Ballers will oppose GT Panthers at 18.30 hours, while Tiger Bay will battle Herstelling at 19.10 hours, and the Guyana Defence Force will take aim at Fruta Conquerors from 19.50 hours. The final fixture will pit the Guyana Police Force against Santos at 20.20 hours.

The overall winner of the men’s tournament will collect $500,000, whilst the second, third and fourth-place finishers will receive $300,000, $200,000, and $100,000 respectively, and the corresponding accolade.

The resulting winner of the women’s section will pocket $200,000, while the second, third, and fourth-place finisher will receive $100,000, $50,000, and $20,000 respectively. The other sponsors of the event include Magnum Tonic Wine, and Lucozade Energy Drink.
