Former national cricket and current deputy Mayor in the City of Georgetown Alfred Mentore has lauded the performances of the Guyana men’s Curling team.

The team recently won gold in the B-Division of the Inaugural Pan

Continental Curling Championship held in Canada and Mentore feels that the feat is significant given that

the sport of Curling was only introduced to Guyana in 2017 with the formation of the Guyana Curling Federation.

“There is great potential for the sport of Curling in Guyana,” he said.

“Curling is one of the world’s oldest sports, and ever since its

introduction to Guyana, the team has achieved tremendous success, thanks to their hard work. For that I wish to extend heartfelt congratulations to the Hussain siblings (Rayad and Farzana), Jason Perreira, Baul Parsaud, Khemraj Goberdhan and coach Paul Madgett and the Guyana Curling Federation for introducing the sport to Guyana and bring recognition to the people and the country.

Mentore says that as a former national cricketer he understood the sacrifices need to meet the top of one’s profession.

“As a former national cricketer, national golfer and sports enthusiast, I understand the level of sacrifice, commitment and training it requires to compete in professional sports and for that it gives me great pleasure and honour to see this group of Guyanese succeed internationally,” he declared.

“With that, it is my hope that the successes of the team will raise awareness and interest in the sport, and also encourage the investment in facilities and resources for the sport of Curling in Guyana and further afield. I would also like to applaud well-wishers and friends of the Canadian Diaspora that gave moral and resourceful support in the early days in the lives of these sportspersons. A special commendation to Gord Ramkissoon whom was instrumental in the early success and rapid development of the participants.

Best wishes to the team as they now advance to the A-Division and will compete against the top countries in the world,” said Mentore.
