New Amsterdam (NA) North walked away with the Region #6 zone title in the One Guyana President’s Cup Football Championship, overcoming Siparuta 3-2 Saturday evening following a 90th minute strike from Joushan Wilson.
Staged at the All Saints Scot’s School ground and viewed by a sizable crowd, Wilson made his presence felt in the dying embers with the winning goal.
A cross into the penalty box from the right side of the field was met by a powerful header which was directed into the far corner of the net.
Prior to the dramatic conclusion, the hosts raced into the lead after Kevon Williams found the back of the net in the 14th minute, uncorking a powerful strike from 23 yards outside the penalty box which flew into the back of the net.
However, two goals in the space of eight minutes from Jeffrey Joseph handed the visitors the lead.
A free kick restored parity to proceedings as Jeffrey blasted a 22-yard strike from just outside the left of the box, which nestled into the left hand corner of the net.
A defensive error then handed Siparuta the lead as a cross into the penalty box was misjudged by the defender, striking his back and rolling into the path of the Jeffrey who blasted the ball into the back of the net.
The score remained unchanged heading into the halftime interval. Nevertheless, it proved to be a game of two halves as the home side tallied two unanswered goals to secure the division title.
A free-kick provided the equalizer with Delroy Ferdinand finding the back of the net in the 71st minute. The right-footed strike emanated from 25 yards outside the penalty box and rifled into the roof of the net, giving the goalkeeper no chance.
The conversion set the tone for the fixture’s eventual end.
Meanwhile, NA South mauled Lower Corentyne 6-0. Leonardo Adams led the rout with a helmet trick in the 22nd, 36th, 44th and 60th minute while Nigel King and Kwesi Mickle scored in the 21st and 52nd minute respectively.
