Carlos Petterson-Grifith took his otherworldly strength talent to Auckland, New Zealand and smashed the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships deadlift record yesterday en route to topping the 93kg (equipped) class.

Nicknamed ‘The Showstopper’, the behemoth, who is used to stepping on the top podium steps wherever he competes, recorded a total of 850kg yesterday to earn the gold medal in the class.

Proudly representing the Golden Arrowhead Down Under, the strongman had a best squat of 340kgs, a bench of 160kgs and a mammoth deadlift of 350kgs to claim the Commonwealth record.

With his adrenaline rushing, Petterson-Griffith made an attempt at 372kg in an effort to break the world record, however his attempt failed.

In an immediate reaction following his heroics at the meet Petterson-Grifith stated that he was nervous initially but settled into record breaking mode and feels blessed to chalk up another win on the international stage.

The athlete whose sojourn was made possible through sponsors, Superior Concrete, Fitness Express, MVP Sports and Space Gym was scheduled to be back on the platform competing in the Classic (Raw) segment of the championship later yesterday.

Bjorn Williams (U-105kg class) is Guyana’s other representative at the meet. This publication will keep readers updated as events unfold.
