Van Lange, Cummings win Mash TT titles

National players Jonathan Van Lange and Natalie Cummings won the men and women’s singles titles Sunday as the curtain came down on the National Sports Commission table tennis championships at the National Gymnasium.

Also winning titles were Orin Hickerson, Malachi Moore, Jasmine Billingy, Akira Watson, Darius Daniels, Zion Hickerson, Aadil Haniff and Chase Outar.

In the men’s singles final, Van Lange defeated Joel Alleyne 11-9, 11-6, 11-8 (3-0).

Van Lange, however, had a more difficult semi-final match against Orin Hickerson which he won 12-10, 12-10-, 9-11, 11-3 (3-1).

Alleyne was taken to five games in his semi-final match against Elishaba Johnson winning 11-9, 11-9, 9-11, 14-16 and 11-9.

After taking a 2-0 lead and leading 6-0 in the third, Alleyne lost his way and the next two sets before eking out an 11-9 victory in the decider.

 In the “B” Class open Hickerson easily defeated Levi Percival 11-7, 11-5, 5-11, 11-8. Joint third were Niran Bissu and veteran Colin France.

Bissu lost to Hickerson (0-3) and France to Percival (2-3)

 The women’s singles was a round robin affair and when the dust settled, Cummings was left unbeaten after defeating Jasmine Billingy (3-0), Thuraia Thomas (3-1) and Samara Sukhai (3-0). Billingy placed second with wins over Thomas (3-1) and Sukhai (3-1) while Thomas was third and Sukhai, fourth.

Billingy won the 19-years and under girls round robin final with Sukhai second, Akira Watson third, Shackecy Damon fourth and Amika Wills, fifth.

Van Lange made it two titles when he won the boys 19-years-and -under category.

He defeated Colin Wong 11-5, 11-8, 11-8 in the final while   Uman Percival, who lost to Van Lange and Ebo McNeil, who lost to Wong, were joint third.

Malachi Moore enhanced his growing reputation by winning the boys 15-years and under division from Mc Neil 11-5, 11-9, 5-

11, 13-15 and 11-8.

Joint third were Zion Hickerson and Chase Outar.

Watson won the girls 15-years and under division by defeating Sukhai 10-12, 11-7, 11-8, 11-3.

Joint third places went to Billingy, who lost to Watson and Seona Barker, who lost to Sukhai.

Watson also won the girls 13 years and under category with Billingy second, Sukhai third, Seona Barker fourth and Shaquacy Daman, fifth.

The boys 13 years and under final was won by Outar, who defeated Darius Daniels 11-5, 11-9, 3-11, 11-8.

Third places went to Kayden Meusa and Ransfield Belfield

 Daniels won the boys 11 years and under category by defeating Zion Hickerson 9-11, 11-7, 11-7, and 13-11. Noel Persaud and Aaron Hopkinson finished joint third.

 Zion Hickerson won the boys nine years and under category after he defeated Raina Benfield 11-3, 11-4 and 11-2.

In the Novices Open category, Aadil Haniff defeated Jadon D’Aguiar 13-11, 11-2, 12-10.

Joint third places went to Shane Razak and Musab Hassan.

The presentation of prizes will be done this afternoon at the National Gymnasium from 5pm.
