As the rain dominated most of the opening day first-round clash in the Guyana Cricket Board senior Inter-County four-day tournament, Essequibo closed in an uncomfortable position against the Select XI yesterday at the National Stadium, Providence.

The Cinderella County won the toss and opted to take first strike and reached 57 for three in 20.3 overs as less than two hours of play was possible.

Two balls into the second over, Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club Sylus Tyndall trapped Avinash Persaud leg before wicket with a delivery that nipped back into the left-hander without a run on the board.

However, his opening partner Kevon Boodie effected the rebuilding with a 32-run partnership for the second wicket with Ronaldo Renee before Boodie was bowled by seamer, Carlos La Rose for 17. His 39-ball innings featured three boundaries.

Renee went on to make 22 from 58 balls. His innings was highlighted by five boundaries before rain stopped play with the score 51 for two after 17 overs. Renee was on 22 and Kemol Savory was on 10.

When play resumed after approximately two hours, Essequibo could only add six runs as Renee was caught by wicketkeeper, Nathan Persaud, off of Demetri Cameron to bring an end to his 58-ball innings.

Renee’s wicket also signaled the last ball of the day as rain stopped play for the final time. Savory is at the crease on 16 not out from 26 balls, hitting two fours so far.

The contest resumes at 10.00 hours today.
