Hetmyer has to know what he wants – Sarwan

The Guyana Cricket Board’s chairman of the senior selection panel, Ramnaresh Sarwan has clarified one of the selection policies of the Board as well as spoken on the non-selection of Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford.

Sarwan confirmed that persons will be eligible for selection by playing in the Board’s inter-county and neither of these players are listed in any of the four teams.

According to Sarwan, “I think it’s difficult to answer for [Hetmyer] Hetty,” when asked about the status of Hetmyer when it comes to him wanting to play for Guyana. He added, “as I said, the board has a policy, once you play inter-county you become eligible for selection for Guyana, now in terms of if Hetty wants to play local cricket, that’s totally up to him.

I don’t believe as a selector I can force him to do that, I’ve spoken to Hetty quite a few times before. I think Hetty is mature enough and old enough to make the right decision and he has to know what he wants.”

The former West Indies skipper pointed out that as it relates to Rutherford, the last update they received was he was injured, however, nothing further. “In terms of Sherfane, we knew he had and injury and nothing was really reported to us since then but for sure, Sherfane is someone we would like to have in our One Day line up and whenever that time meets, we will be able to reach out to him and ask him if he will be able to play for Guyana in that format,” Sarwan said.

Rutherford has played 17 first-class matches for Guyana with three half-centuries and 33 wickets under his belt while Hetmyer has featured in 21 first-class matches for Guyana, hitting one century and five fifties.
