The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) yesterday responded to the fire at the Mahdia Secondary School which left 19 children dead.

In a statement, the CDC said that yesterday it donated a quantity of personal items to the Mahdia fire victims who are now under  care at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).

Those items include hygiene products, clothing and other personal care items.

These items originated from a combination of sources: donations from the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the CDC Volunteer Corps, and from the Commission’s storage, according to the CDC. Sister Shannon Haynes, one of the nurses attached to the Burn Care Unit of the GPHC, indicated that the donation was heartfelt and timely.

Secondly, the CDC has also sent a quantity of relief items such as mattresses, food items, sanitary supplies, clothing and care packages to Mahdia.

These items were donated by the Central Islamic Organization of Guyana, Comfort Sleep, the Red Cross and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.

As time goes by, the CDC says that more supplies are intended for the Region 8 town where the fire occurred.
