Two West Coast Demerara men are in police custody after they were busted on Monday at Quartzstone Landing, Cuyuni River, Region Seven, with 12.2 pounds of cannabis.

The two men were identified as 26-year-old Rickford Rogers, and 23-year-old Mckya Smith, both of Best Village located on the West Coast of Demerara. They were on a boat that was transporting passengers and fuel to the landing when the cannabis was found.

A police report stated that while at Quartzstone Landing, ranks observed the speed boat transporting passengers and fuel approaching. Upon its arrival, the ranks identified themselves and requested to search the boat.

After a search was carried out on all occupants, including Rogers and Smith, it was reported that nothing illegal was found on them and in their personal belongings. However, the ranks noticed a sealed cardboard box in the boat which the boat’s captain indicated belonged to Rogers and Smith.

When questioned by the ranks, both Smith and Rogers accepted ownership of the box which was subsequently searched. Inside, the ranks discovered eleven large plastic-wrapped parcels which contained leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis were revealed.

The two men were then told of the offence, cautioned and arrested. They were taken along with the cannabis to the Bartica Police Station. When weighed, the suspected cannabis amounted to 12.2 pounds. They both are pending charges.
