Suriname’s ‘delayed’ oil breakthrough delaying bilateral ambitions with neighbouring Guyana

Not too many Guyanese are likely to forget what in recent times, was by far the highest point in relations between Guyana and neighbouring Suriname when presidents Irfaan Ali and Chan Santokhi were either showing up in each other’s capitals, or else, otherwise making the point to the rest of the world about their oil ‘fortunes’ and how these would become the catalyst for the transformation of bilateral relations which, up until then, had been characterised by a discomfiting prickliness deriving mainly from the age-old Corentyne River dispute.

GTA sets out its stall on tourism infrastructure

Seemingly mindful of the fact that Guyana’s visitor arrival bona fides needs to keep pace with what, these days, in an enhanced external interest in Guyana, the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) earlier this week issued a lengthy media statement which set out the suite of conveniences and attractions which it continues to put in place in order to keep pace with the demands of both visitors as well as ordinary Guyanese seeking a taste of the tourism amenities that the country has to offer.

The six persons who were charged with conspiracy to facilitate the escape of death row prisoner, Royden Williams, known as ‘Smallie’, have all pleaded not guilty The defendants are former head of security at the Mazaruni Prison, Alexander Hopkinson; Rajmohan Autor known as ‘Chico’, 48, a businessman of Parika Outfall; Frangeliz Jugandry Flores Perez, 28, a Venezuelan of Alexander Street, Kitty; Omar Witherspoon, a prison officer of Stanley-town, New Amsterdam; Conroy Hosannah, a prison officer of Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme, East Canje, Berbice; and Oldfield Romulus, 50, a prison officer of Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice.

Dear Editor, I write to acknowledge the letter of Mr. Tony Vieira of 9 September, in which he retraced in not so many words,  some of the ground I covered in mine of 3 August last, as regards the big trucks outfitted with blinding strobe lights that are terrorizing the public on our roadways; the need for signage on the highways saying “Keep left except when overtaking”, as per our existing law, which is applicable not only to truck drivers but to minibuses and other inconsiderate drivers; and the ignoramuses driving at night on our regular roads with fog lights.

GMSA and gov’t meeting on small business issues should be hastened

After he had made an undisguised ‘pitch’ on Thursday, August 3, at the Guyana Manufacturing & Services Association (GMSA) Dinner and Awards Ceremony for the GMSA to engage government on the issue of the private sector body interfacing with the state-run Small Business Bureau (SBB), GMSA President, Ramsay Ali, had told the Stabroek Business that there had been an expectation that such a meeting was likely to have taken place “in two weeks’ time.”
